Reflecting on my work this academic year.

Like last year, I sent out a survey to teachers asking for feedback. I kept the questions that I asked last year, to enable me to compare the data, and also added some questions to be more in line with the 360 surveys of other members of the school’s Office of Teaching and Learning.

I always tend to be harsh on myself – I’m just not satisfied with “doing OK” – but I’ll try to remain objective!! I’ll start with the comparable data I have:

The first thing I notice is that, in all categories, the feedback is positive!

In terms of approachability, it seems that all staff who responded are happy to approach me. However, fewer teachers are ‘extremely comfortable’ approaching me than were last year. I wonder why, and I wonder if it has anything to do with me being unavailable to be approached for part of the year due to the extensive work on the yearbook and my covering an EC class for part of the day from December to May. This is an anonymous survey so I have no way of finding that out.

My rating for collaboration is slightly higher, if only by 3%, which is encouraging. Of course, I want it to be ALL blue eventually!

The most growth is shown with regards to my knowledge base. Last year 35% of teachers thought that I knew my stuff. The data shows that 18% more teachers think that now.

Moving on to the questions that were new to this year’s survey:

Sarah’s work as Technology Coach is aligned with the school mission and vision.

Sarah effectively shares key information needed in a timely manner.

Sarah respects my ideas and suggestions.

Sarah is knowledgeable about students’ developmental needs.

Sarah is willing to help me identify resources to enhance my teaching practices.

Sarah models behaviour in line with the norms of collaboration.

Again, it is encouraging to see that ALL the feedback is positive. If I had to choose any of the above to focus on as an area of growth for next year, it would be respecting teachers. I want that one ALL blue!! Why? More coming soon in another blog post that’s brewing in my head!

I also asked teachers for some ‘traffic light’ feedback – suggestions of things I should stop doing, keep doing, and start doing. Here’s what they said:

What should Sarah KEEP doing?

What should Sarah STOP doing?

What should Sarah START doing?

I have a fair few ideas about what I would like my professional development focus to be next year. Need to let them all percolate for a bit and then narrow the idea to something manageable. Watch this space!
