This year I started the initiative of a student tech team, called the Twiga Tech Team. I feel like it hasn’t had the impact I was hoping for, and definitely seemed to fizzle out in Semester 2. Today I gathered all students who had been a part of the team (Semester 1 and Semester 2 groups) to gain their perspectives. They were much more positive about it that I expected!
This was my vision at the beginning of the academic year (August 2018):
Here is all the feedback I received from the students today:
From this feedback, I’m going to implement two changes:
This year, the students for each Grade decided what the lunchtime activity would be. Most students agreed they would like more choice… so next year, students will be able to choose what they do when they come at lunchtime – we have a wide range of resources in the Makerspace!
This year, each class had one student on the team per semester. Next year, we will increase this to two per class, per semester (total 4 per class, per year).
I will also continue to look at models other schools use and find ways to further develop student agency and leadership. I had envisioned the team running workshops/presentations for teachers and parents, but they didn’t happen. I’m really hoping that this initiative will grow next year.
ALWAYS striving to make things better for THEM.
